Winona State University, also referred to as simply WSU, is a comprehensive, regional public university in Winona, which is the county seat of Winona County, situated in Minnesota, USA, having a population estimated at a number of more than 27 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Winona is known as the stained glass capital of USA, and was named after Princess We-Noh-Nah, daughter of Chief Wapasha (Wabasha) III.
WSU was established in 1858, by Minnesota State Legislature, ''to prepare teachers for the common schools of the state''. Winona State is the oldest member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, and it currently has an enrollment of more than 8000 students, to whom it offers more than 80 undergraduate, pre-professional, licensure, graduate and doctorate programs, on 3 campuses: the main campus in Winona and the campus branches West Campus in Winona, and Winona State University-Rochester.
For the quality education offered, WSU has been featured as one of America’s 100 Best College Buys for quality and value for 14 years in a row, and has been also named one of the ''Best in the Midwest'', by The Princeton Review, for 6 consecutive years, in the 2010 edition of U.S.News & World Report's ''America's Best Colleges'', being ranked among the top 50 public and private institutions in the Midwest Region Master's Category, as well.
Winona State's athletic teams are known as the Winona State Warriors, who compete in Division II NCAA, in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference for most sports, except women's gymnastics, in which they compete in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Warriors are, perhaps, best known for their football team, which has won the NSIC conference championship ten times, between 1993 and 2007.
The distinctive colors of the Warriors are purple and white and their mascot is named ''Wazoo''.
